Title: “‘The Englishmen Here are Much Disliked’: Hostility towards English Immigrants in Early-Twentieth-Century Canada”
Between 1896 and 1914, Canada experienced a period of phenomenal economic
growth and development. Immigration played an important role in this boom,
with Canada receiving around three million immigrants during these years.
Approximately one-third of the new arrivals were from England. As in
earlier periods, England was regarded as one of the preferred migrant
sources: many Canadians saw themselves as British and regarded Canada as a
British nation. However, it seems that, despite their preferred status,
English immigrants faced a great deal of hostility in Canada during this
period. Why were English immigrants seemingly both welcomed and detested?
This paper will examine the hostility expressed towards English immigrants -
a phenomenon which has not attracted much scholarly attention – by analysing
the torrent of articles and letters which appeared on this issue in
newspapers and periodicals on both sides of the Atlantic in early-1907: a
fascinating explosion of interest and impassioned debate. It will consider
the nature of the hostility expressed towards English immigrants and explore
its possible causes.
